Getting Ready for Your Photo Shoot (Without the Stress)

So… you booked a photo shoot.

Exciting! And maybe a tiny bit nerve-wracking? Totally normal.

The good news: you don’t need to be a model or know how to pose to get great photos. A little prep goes a long way, and I’ve got you covered. Here’s how to show up feeling confident, comfortable, and ready to have some fun.

Pick Your Outfit Before the Night Before

  • Future you will be very grateful for this.

  • Choose clothes you feel good in (confidence > trends)

  • Stick to neutral or soft colors—those photograph beautifully

  • Skip big logos, super busy patterns, and neon shades

  • Make sure everything fits well and is wrinkle-free

If it’s a group or family session, think coordinated, not matching like a sports team. (Read more about what to wear in my blog post, What to Wear for Your Photo Session (Without Overthinking It).)

2. Keep Hair + Makeup Simple and “You”

You don’t need to reinvent yourself for photos.

  • Haircuts are best a week or so ahead of time

  • Moisturize skin and lips leading up to the shoot

  • Go with natural makeup unless bold fits the vibe

  • Please don’t try brand-new skincare products the day before (your skin will betray you)

3. Sleep, Water, Repeat

This might be the least glamorous advice, but it works.

  • Get a good night’s sleep

  • Drink water like it’s your job

  • Go easy on salty foods or alcohol the night before

You’ll look fresher, feel better, and thank yourself later.

4. Bring a Few Just-in-Case Items

A small bag of essentials = peace of mind.

Think:

  • Lip balm

  • Hairbrush or comb

  • Powder or blotting papers

  • Safety pins or fashion tape

  • Comfy shoes if we’re moving around

Better to have it and not need it than the other way around.

5. You Don’t Need to Know How to Pose (Promise)

That’s my job, not yours.

I’ll guide you, give direction, and help you feel natural—even if it feels a little awkward at first. Trust the process, stay open, and don’t be afraid to speak up if something feels off.

The best photos usually happen when you relax and just be yourself.

6. Show Up a Little Early

Rushing is the enemy of good vibes.

Arriving a few minutes early gives you time to:

  • Breathe

  • Settle in

  • Fix last-minute details

Calm energy = better photos.

7. Bring a Good Attitude (Seriously)

You don’t need to be “perfect” to look amazing in photos.

Laugh. Move. Be yourself. Real moments always photograph better than stiff poses or forced smiles.

Final Pep Talk

Preparing for your photo shoot doesn’t have to be complicated. Show up comfortable, relaxed, and ready to have fun—that’s where the magic happens.

Now let’s make something awesome!
