How to Prepare Kids for a Family Photo Session (Without Stress)

If you’re feeling nervous about how your kids will do during a family photo session, take a deep breath. You’re not alone—and you’re not doing anything wrong.

The good news? Kids don’t need to be “perfect” for beautiful photos to happen. A little thoughtful preparation (and a lot of realistic expectations) goes a long way.

Here’s how to set your kids—and yourself—up for a smooth, relaxed session.

Keep the Explanation Simple

You don’t need to give your kids a full rundown of the session. In fact, too much buildup can create pressure.

Instead, try something simple like:

“We’re going to hang out and take some pictures together.”

“We’re going to play and spend time as a family.”

Avoid phrases like “You have to smile” or “You need to behave.” The goal is to help them feel curious, not evaluated.

Let Go of the Pressure for “Perfect”

Kids pick up on stress quickly. If they sense that something has to go a certain way, it can make them feel anxious or resistant.

Go into the session knowing:

  • Wiggles are normal

  • Big feelings are okay

  • Breaks are expected

Some of the most meaningful images happen when kids are simply being themselves. As a former children’s librarian, I strongly encourage wiggles and all of the sillies to come out and play. It’s in those moments when your littles are relaxed and comfortable that I will capture the best candids and natural photos.

Plan for Full Tummies and Happy Bodies

This one matters more than you think.

Try to:

  • Schedule the session around naps when possible (I will work around your schedule!)

  • Feed kids beforehand (snacks are always welcome)

  • Dress them in clothes they can move comfortably in

A tired, hungry, or uncomfortable child will always let us know—and that’s okay. Planning ahead just helps everything feel easier.

Bring a Comfort Item (Yes, Even If It Shows)

A favorite lovey, small toy, or blanket can be incredibly grounding—especially for younger kids. If it ends up in a few photos, that’s not a problem. It’s part of the story of this season.

We can always take a few images without it too. There’s room for both.

Trust the Photographer’s Process

You don’t need to coach your kids during the session. In fact, the best thing you can do is simply stay present with them.

I’ll guide things gently, follow their lead when needed, and adjust as we go. When parents relax and engage with their kids naturally, the photos fall into place.

Know That the “In-Between” Moments Matter

The magic often happens between the planned moments—when kids are moving, laughing, snuggling, or even taking a break.

Those moments are just as meaningful (often more so) than a perfectly timed smile.

A Final Thought for Parents

Your kids don’t need to perform. They don’t need to impress anyone. They just need to feel safe, supported, and loved.

If you show up ready to meet them where they are, I’ll take care of the rest.

And one day, when you look back at these photos, you won’t be focused on whether everyone smiled at the same time. You’ll remember how this season felt—and that’s what truly matters.
