What to Expect When You're Expecting... Maternity Photo Session

You've read the books. You've got the nursery half put together. And somewhere on your to-do list, in between doctor's appointments and registry lists, is "book maternity photos" — followed by a small wave of "...but what does that actually involve?"

I get it. So consider this your guide to what to expect when you're expecting maternity photos — no baby books required.

When Should You Schedule Your Maternity Session?

The sweet spot for most maternity sessions is between 30 and 34 weeks. By this point, your bump is beautifully round and defined, but you're (hopefully) still comfortable enough to stand, walk, and pose for an hour or so without feeling like you need a nap immediately after.

That said, there's no single "right" time. Some clients prefer earlier sessions around 28 weeks if they're expecting multiples or know they'll be less comfortable later. Others wait until closer to 36 weeks for an even fuller bump. If you're not sure what's right for you, that's something we can figure out together once we're talking timeline.

I work with clients throughout Roanoke and the greater Virginia area, so if you're local, we've got some beautiful options for both outdoor and indoor sessions depending on the season and your comfort level.

What Should You Wear?

This is usually the first question I get, and the good news is: it's simpler than it feels.

Flowy dresses are a maternity session favorite for a reason — they photograph beautifully, they're comfortable, and they highlight your bump without clinging in ways that feel less flattering. Solid colors and soft, muted tones tend to photograph better than busy patterns, especially for outdoor sessions with natural backdrops.

If you're bringing your partner or kids into some of the photos, coordinating (not matching) is the way to go — similar tones and textures rather than identical outfits. And if you want a few different looks throughout the session, that's absolutely an option; we can plan for one or two outfit changes so you get some variety in your gallery.

What Actually Happens During the Session?

Here's the honest answer: it's a lot less complicated than you're picturing.

We'll start with some simple, guided posing — think gentle hands-on-belly moments, soft walking shots, maybe leaning against a tree or doorway. I'll direct you through each pose so you're never standing there wondering what to do with your hands (a very common worry, and a very unnecessary one). A little natural movement — walking, swaying, a real laugh — almost always photographs better than a stiff, held pose anyway.

If your partner or other kids are joining, we'll work in some family moments too — these often end up being some of the most emotional images in the whole gallery.

Maternity photo sessions typically run about 45 minutes to an hour, which is enough time to get real variety without leaving you exhausted and swollen-ankled by the end.

How Do You Prepare, Practically Speaking?

A few small things that make a big difference:

  • Stay hydrated the day before and day of — it helps you feel your best and reduces swelling.

  • Eat beforehand. A hungry, hangry mama-to-be does not make for relaxed photos.

  • Bring touch-up basics — lip balm, a hairbrush, blotting sheets — just in case.

  • Wear something comfortable to travel in, and change into your session outfit once we're ready to start, especially for outdoor locations in the height of summer.

And that's really it. You don't need a Pinterest board of poses memorized or a professional glam squad on standby (although some clients do opt to have their hair and makeup done beforehand, that's always welcome too).

Why Maternity Photos Are Worth It

Pregnancy is a genuinely fleeting season — a handful of months out of an entire lifetime — and it's one that's easy to under-document because you're tired, busy, and focused on what's coming next rather than what's happening right now. But this particular chapter, the anticipation and the changing body and the quiet nesting energy, doesn't come back. Maternity photos are a way of holding onto it.

Ready to Book Your Session?

If you're local to Roanoke or the surrounding mid-Atlantic area and you're somewhere in that second or third trimester window, I'd love to talk through what a session could look like for you. No pressure, no stress — just a conversation about your due date, your vision, and how we can make this feel easy.

Feel free to reach out anytime to start the conversation.
